Emmett Hunger Free Community Initiative
The Emmett Hunger Free Community Initiative “envisions Gem Community to be self-reliant with active, compassionate citizens who will volunteer and align resources to enhance of Valley of Plenty.” The core coalition team includes the Mayor of Emmett, Gem County Commissioner, City Councilwoman, Asst. Superintendent of School District and alternative school, chamber of commerce, emergency food pantry and soup kitchen, faith community, local farmer/rancher, Latino community, community action partnership, and senior center. The community coalition originated from our 2010 Idaho Summit on Hunger and Food Insecurity.
The Hunger Free Communities Initiative looks beyond emergency food assistance and explores local food systems, economic development, community support systems, and civic engagement for enduring solutions to build a food secure and thriving community. The Emmett pilot is a public and private effort to assess community strengths and challenges, and engage community members to plan and implement local solutions that promote healthy independence.
